Did Gingrich really propose building a mirror system in space?

Remember what it’s like to play telephone? You start with one statement, one person whispers it to the next, and by the time you get to the end of the circle you end up with something completely different.

This article does a nice job of tracing the history of Newt  Gingrich’s alleged proposition to build a panel of mirrors in space was quoted as “a mirror system in space could provide the light equivalent of many full moons so that there would be no need for nighttime lighting of the highways.” Read more here for the archaeology of that quote. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17716-top-science-body-calls-for-geoengineering-plan-b.html

Obviously none of the people behind this idea took into consideration how it would make Mother Earth feel to be looking into a bank of mirrors all the time!
